Literature Text

She is the overbearing mother, standing over you and thinking of all the things that can, nay, will go wrong. When you make a decision, she hovers over your shoulder, repeating the consequences until you want to scream. You think you'll go for a walk, and she is there; "while you are out, anything could happen to you". She tells you you'll be mugged, murdered, mutilated; whispers terrible possibilities in your ear and brings you to your knees.

Her certainty seeps into your subconscious and you begin to doubt. Your footsteps falter as you step t'ward the door, and you halt at its threshold. She warns you again of the dangers ahead and you close the door instead. "Tomorrow," you tell yourself, "I'll stand up to her", and you sit back down to the TV.

Even there, though, you are not safe. She has new concerns and she slips them into you like fluids through a drip; an endless series of "What If" that eats you raw from the inside and leaves you desperate, desperate to save yourself.

And, like an overbearing mother, she traps you into herself, makes you believe without her you are unsafe, incapable. Whatever you used to think you could do is gone, and you are bleeding promise from your pores with every word she speaks.
Today's prompts weren't doing it for me, so I figured it was time for another personified MI. I chose generalised anxiety this time.

Very good piece. I think you personified anxiety perfectly, and aptly portrayed how crippling it can be. Good work.
