Literature Text

Yellow-haired september,
the wattle and warratah battle
a spray of gold for 5c stamps
the familiar green
of wide-lipped leaves
underwear for fragrant blossoms;

Toads against the Roaches,
a stately battle held
through winter months--
(we gave the Blues
a pity win, now Maroons
will take it home and my partner
says two can play at this--
it's Blues all the way);

beyond it all, deep
in the nation's heart
the people live on
red-orange soil; their skins
burned black--
a millenia of evolutions
still perfecting themselves.
Doubling up today. This is for both NaPoWriMo day 19, and Rising-Artists' prompt challenge #27 - Toucan Colours. It turns out that the colours of a toucan are pretty much all colours associated with Australia.

Section one talks about our national flower, the Golden Wattle, and references some things from history -- including "Yellow-Haired September", which was actually the name of a lecture held around the wattle/it's use as our national flower. (Green and yellow on the toucan.)

The second section is devoted to State of Origin, in which two states (NSW and Queensland) battle it out in some sport thing that's really popular and even I barrack for my team despite not actually understanding how to play or even what particular sport we're talking about here. (Blue and maroon on the toucan.)

Section three is about our rich cultural heritage in the centre of Australia, where rural communities of indigenous folk thrived despite harsh temperatures. I hope the skin references are okay -- I don't mean to imply indigenous people are suffering bad sunburn or anything like that, but I wanted to reference the evolutionary difference in skin colour that lead to higher melanin levels in peoples from particular regions. (Orange and black on the toucan.)

Anywho, link below for information on the prompt/challenge. :)

**EDIT: I found a way to work a variation of "toucan" into the poem. I'm so proud of myself and my punning.

This is fascinating, as a non-Aussie. I loved the last stanza.
